Colombo confirms his return to the top with second place in Val di Sole

One can always look back at a race in two different ways; with the final result and with the manner. Filippo Colombo proved convincing in both ways today at the fifth round of the Mercedes-Benz UCI MTB World Cup.
A week after his silver medal at the European Championships in Brno, Czech Republic, Filippo Colombo arrived in Val di Sole with legitimate expectations. The U23 Swiss Champion could feel that his shape improved since the last two World Cups in Vallnord and Val di Sole and he was looking to another great battle with Vlad Dascalu. The gifted Romanian won the last three rounds of the World Cup and the European Championships and was the clear favorite of today’s race.
The race unfolded like most of the previous U23 races. A small group quickly cleared away to become smaller every lap. With two laps to go, Dascalu and Colombo were the only two riders left at the front. “From then on, we just attacked each other. He did, I did but none of us managed to ride away. We both knew it was crucial to enter the last downhill in first position since it’s almost impossible to overtake after that so we sprinted to the top of the last climb as if the finish line was there…” Dascalu proved the strongest at this game and Colombo couldn’t overtake him in the last straight.
“All in all, I’m happy with my race and with my result” Colombo explained. “Vlad was once again the strongest but I could feel that the difference between the two of us was very little today. It’s is very encouraging and I’m looking forward to racing on home soil next week.”
