Sixth place for Flückiger at the World Championships

11. settembre 2017 — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team

Lukas Flückiger took his best result of the season at the most important race of the year; the Cross-country World Championships.

After a year marked by doubts and disappointing results, Lukas Flückiger rode to his best result of the season on the very fast and dusty course of Cairns, Australia. “I felt good the last two days before the race” he explained “but after such a difficult year I didn’t really know what to expect. I also wasn’t sure how my ribs (broken at the Grand Raid at the end of August) would hold on the technical course.” A good start in the top 15 gave him the confidence he often lacks to move forward. “I passed a few riders and found myself in the top 10 half way in the race. After such a tough season I was a bit doubting of my capacities to do much better and didn’t dare digging too much. In the end, a sixth place at World Champs doesn’t mean much but I can only be happy with it since it’s my best result of the season.”

Mission Accomplished for Reto Indergand

Reto Indergand managed the top 10 result he was hoping for: “I didn’t have the best start but quickly found my own rhythm to make my way towards my goal. Many riders crashed or had mechanical issues so it was important to keep focused and avoid mistakes. I left it all out there and am happy I could reach my goal.”

Disappointing results for Absalon, Forster and Carod

Two weeks after a great team performance in Val di Sole, better results were expected from the riders of the BMC MTB Racing Team. If Flückiger and Indergand performed at their levels, one cannot say as much about the other three riders. In fact, Absalon was never in contention for a medal and took a disappointing 7th place. On their sides, the young riders Forster and Carod struggled with illness but made a point of finishing the race.

Results:

  1. Nino Schurter (SUI) 1:27'44''
  2. Jaroslav Kuhlavy (CZE) +0'07''
  3. Thomas Litscher (SUI) +0'15''

10. Reto Indergand (SUI) +2'21''

60. Titouan Carod (FRA) -1 lap
