Will Clarke Back on Form with 2nd place at Challenge Fuerteventura25. April 2016 — Triathlon Team
After a very difficult season in 2015 Will Clarke of the BMC-Etixx Pro Triathlon Team turned the tables with a superb performance at Challenge Fuerteventura over the weekend. After an exciting battle, he finished less than 30 seconds behind winner Andi Boecherer (GER) and in front of third placed Timo Bracht (GER).
Ironman Brazil is Clark’s first big goal of the 2016 season and Challenge Fuerteventura was Will Clarke’s preparation race – a perfect choice due to the competitive line-up and an arduous bike course. Clarke got his race off to a great start with an excellent swim, exiting the water in third place, just a few seconds behind the leader, Van Lierde. After a quick transition, Clarke took off on the 90km bike course, he entered T2 in fourth place, but not far off the leader Boecherer. In the closing kilometres of the run it was then a fight between four for the title. In the end, Clarke almost managed to snag the title, but he ran out of meters in an exciting finish, and had to settle down for second place, 24 seconds behind Andi Boecherer (GER).
Clarke was pretty delighted with his race: "I am really stoked with my performance today. It is great to be back at this level and to be able to ride with some of the best athletes in the world. I had a tough year last year and this really feels like I turned the corner. The swim was perfect today. On the bike I rode by myself for the first hour. It was incredible hard and fast today. I managed to enter T2 together with Boecherer and Dreitz. The race went perfect for me until that stage. Unfortunately I felt I missed some specific race fitness and had a bad patch on the run around the half way mark. But then it clicked and I managed to pull back a few athletes ahead of me and to run to second place. Just not enough to take the win today, but I am extremely pleased. I want to thank everybody for the amazing support over the last year, especially my family, our sports director Ben De Wolf, the entire supports team of BMC-Etixx p/b Uplace and my coach Luc Van Lierde. It is a great feeling to be back and I really look forward to the rest of the season."
