Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco Concludes With Final Time Trial8. April 2017, Eibar (ESP) — Road Team
After six tough days of racing, which saw BMC Racing Team out at the front of the race, Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco drew to a close with riders racing against the clock over a 27.7km course.
The lead changed hands multiple times throughout the day as riders tackled an opening 6.3km climb followed by a fast, sweeping descent and a flat run-in to the finish.
Eventually, it was Primož Roglič (LottoNL-Jumbo) who proved the fastest on the day, setting stopping the clock at 35’58” to take the stage win ahead of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team), who successfully defended his leader’s jersey to secure overall victory.
BMC Racing Team was in the thick of the action over the whole week with riders in the breakaway on three consecutive stages plus two late attacks from Nicolas Roche.
Stage 5 also saw Samuel Sánchez launch an explosive move inside the final kilometer before missing out on victory due to a late crash. Sports Director, Max Sciandri gives his final thoughts on the race below.
Quotes from the Sports Director’s Car with Max Sciandri:
"It was obviously disappointing to lose Samuel Sánchez yesterday as we were in a good position for both a stage result and the General Classification. However, there are still positives that we can take away with Damiano Caruso and Alessandro De Marchi playing a crucial role in helping Samuel get into the right position yesterday."
"While we had some good opportunities in the breakaways, we aren't leaving the race with the results we were looking for as a team. But, Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco is always a demanding race and a good way to build form as some of our riders look ahead to racing in the Ardennes."
