Nathan Van Hooydonck has been ruled out of Sunday’s Gent-Wevelgem after developing pharyngitis and will be replaced by Jempy Drucker in the seven-rider team.

“Nathan developed pharyngitis early in the week as well as a fever, which required complete rest and no training. Unfortunately, he also developed esophagitis which prolonged his illness and will prevent him from participating at Gent-Wevelgem. We will continue to monitor Nathan’s recovery and determine his return to competition at the earliest possible time,” BMC Racing Team doctor, Dr. Michel Cerfontaine said.

Van Hooydonck is disappointed to miss Gent-Wevelgem but hopes to race the remaining classics.

“Obviously, I'm very disappointed about not being able to race tomorrow. I hope to do a training ride tomorrow and see how my body feels. If I feel okay maybe there is a bit of hope I can make it to the other classics,” Van Hooyndock explained.

An update on Van Hooyndock’s expected return to competition will be provided when possible.
