Swiss Bike Cup Finals: Flückiger Takes the Win, Indergand the Overall29. August 2016, Basel — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team
The fifth and last round of the Swiss Bike Cup took place in Muttenz Basel. The three BMC riders at the start, Lukas Flückiger, Reto Indergand and Martin Fanger, worked as a team to achieve great personal performances.
The final round of the Swiss Bike Cup is famous for its fast course which made the race very tactical in the last few years. The BMC MTB Racing Team riders took advantage of their numerical superiority to take the win, the second place and the overall victory of the Swiss Bike Cup series.
First win of the season for Lukas Flückiger
The 2016 season has been a tough one for Lukas Flückiger who never managed to find his usual pace. A week after his second place at the Grand Raid, the 32 years-old rider decided to take the race in his own hands from the start. He took the lead in the first uphill and completed the first lap with an advantage of 15 seconds. After that, and despite the hard work of the chasing group, nobody could see him again before the finish line. Flückiger crossed the line more than a minute ahead of team mate Martin Fanger and Australian Dan McConnell. “It feels great to come back strong after such a bad season” he said with satisfaction and relief. “I’m now focusing on the final round of the World Cup and hope for another strong performance at the last XCO race of the season”.
Best performance of Martin Fanger at HC level
Reto Indergand and Martin Fanger did a great job in the chasing group making sure Flückiger would not be caught. Once his victory was secured, the two riders could play their own cards. Martin Fanger took his chance in the final lap attacking on a flat section of the course. He crossed the line in second place recording the best result of the season and best performance ever in a HC (Hors Category) race.
Reto Indergand winner of the 2016 Swiss Bike Cup
2016 has been a breakthrough season for Reto Indergand. The quiet rider entered the top 10 of the World Cup three times so far and won one round of the Swiss Bike Cup. His consistence at the four events he took part to made him win the overall classification of the Swiss series. “It’s a real surprise for me to win it. The Swiss Cup is always very well attended and is the strongest series after the World Cup so I’m super happy to add it to my palmares!”
Flückiger, Fanger and Indergand will be joined by Julien Absalon for the final round of the UCI MTB World Cup in Vallnord, Andorra next weekend. Unfortunately, Lars Forster had to put an end to his season and will miss the event.
