Strong Team Performance at the Proffix Swiss Bike Cup10. April 2017, Rivera, Switzerland — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team
The BMC MTB Racing Team showed an excellent team performance but fell to world number one Nino Schurter.
The first round of the Proffix Swiss Bike Cup saw a battle between the BMC MTB Racing Team and the Scott Sram MTB Racing Team. The latest took the win while the men in red and black showed a great team performance.
As the gun went in Rivera, Ticino, Olympic Champion Nino Schurter took off followed closely by Lars Forster and Titouan Carod. The trio rode away for the first two laps opening a comfortable gap on the chasing group. The situation changed dramatically on the third lap when Lars Forster punctured and had to ride half a lap with a front flat. At the same time, Julien Absalon caught up with Carod and went on chasing his best enemy Schurter.
Julien Absalon reassured himself
Suffering from pollen allergies for a few weeks, Julien Absalon could finally breathe normally and fight with full capacities. “When he passed me in the third lap I didn’t even try to keep his back wheel, he was impressive” said Titouan Carod. The European Champion rode solo to second place and crossed the finish line with a big smile on his face. “I’m relieved! I knew the legs where good but it doesn’t help if you can’t breathe… It looks like things are getting better and it definitely feels good to race at full potential” Absalon said. “Nino was definitely too strong today and he managed his gap really well; he could go faster for sure. But the main objectives are only coming in a month and a half.”
Carod and Indergand in the mix
Just behind usual Schurter-Absalon battle, Titouan Carod and Reto Indergand rode their ways to third and fourth place ensuring a large presence of the BMC colors on the podium.
“I had a great start” explained Carod “but I had a bit of a bad moment when Nino decided to go. I probably suffered from the heat. From then on, I focused on managing myself and holding on the third place until the finish”; which he did. A minute behind, Reto Indergand crossed the finish line pretty satisfied: “I felt much better than last week in Montichiari. The first race of the season is always a hard one for me; now the 2017 season is underway.”
The BMC MTB Racing Team will race next in Haiming, Austria for the second round of the Proffix Swiss Cup that takes place on the 23rd of April.
