Pavel Sivakov put in a strong performance at the U23 Liège-Bastogne-Liège to finish second and secure his spot on the podium, in his first year with BMC Development Team.
Sivakov and Bram Welten both made their way into an early breakaway of eleven riders, which was able to extend their lead to a maximum time gap of five minutes.
Sivakov was of the four remaining breakaway riders who reached the La Roche aux Fauchons summit first and headed into the last 25km at the front of the race.
After multiple attacks, it was Logan Owen (Axeon Hagens Berman) who powered to the front and took the win, while Sivakov rode solo over the final kilometers for second. Owen’s Axeon teammate Ruben Guerreiro won the chase for third.
Quotes of the Day
Pavel Sivakov: “Today was the first time since the beginning of the season that I was feeling really good so I feel great after that ride. I took the break at the beginning, I felt good, my legs felt good and I knew that the break was going to have a big gap and go all the way to the finish.”
“This is a really tough race, so I am happy with my result and I am now really looking forward to next week’s race. I hope to be just as strong or stronger. We have a really good team and I think we will be able to well.”
Klaas Lodewyck, Sports Director: “After the final climb there were four guys in the breakaway and Pavel attacked, but [Logan] Owen immediately countered his move and took over at the front of the race. In the the end, it was a tough fight for the finish with Pavel riding alone with the group chasing behind him for the final 7-8km.”
“I’m happy with the result and the whole team did a good job, Pavel especially as he is a young rider. This win will be good for his motivation and experience in the future.”
