Philipsen Continues BMC Development Team's Run of Podium Finishes19. March 2017, Mol (BEL) — Development Team
Jasper Philipsen added to BMC Development Team’s growing list of podium finishes after a final battle for the line saw him take second place behind Mathias Van Gompel (Lotto Soudal U23) at Zuidkempense Pijl today, March 19.
The peloton kept tight control of the early stages of the day, and after 35km on the road, the race remained together.
Eventually, splits in the peloton, saw a leading group of 16 riders including Philipsen, Reto Müller, and Patrick Müller, begin to distance themselves from the main bunch.
With 15km to go, the breakaway, which was now made up of 18 riders, had a lead of just under a minute but with no organized chase behind them, it looked like the winner would be decided from within this group.
Attacks quickly followed with Philipsen able to make it into a group of eight leaders that headed under the flamme rouge together before a burst of acceleration from Van Gompel saw him ride solo to the line.
After 158km of racing, Philipsen showed his strength and determination, winning the sprint for second place and securing his first podium finish for BMC Development Team.
Quotes from the Finish Line
“Eventually, the peloton began to split, and Reto Müller was positioned in the front group, but then, Patrick Müller and myself were able to bridge the gap with two other riders and join him at the front of the race. It was this group of riders that was able to stay in front for the rest of the day.”
“In the end, there were lots of attacks, and I was able to stick on the wheel of every move until the final kilometer when Mathias Van Gompel (Lotto Soudal U23) accelerated, and there was no reaction from reduced lead group. After this, the rest of the group knew that we would be sprinting for second. I felt like I still had enough energy as we approached the line, so I dug deep and gave it everything I could.”
“While it would have been great to win, I am happy with today’s race and the form I showed. I think I can leave here with a lot of confidence as I was still feeling good after almost 160km of racing. It was great to have the kilometers in my legs from Friday’s race, and I know that I can continue to grow from here as the season continues.”
Sports Director, Jens Blatter:
“Once again we had a super strong team today. I’m happy that Jasper Philipsen could finish on the podium at his home race and I think he showed his strength and skill as a rider. Reto and Patrick Müller were also in today’s breakaway, and I think that they were looking strong and that they had both recovered well following Handzame Challenge on Friday. The rest of the team spent the majority of the race riding at the front of the peloton and maintained this position on the cobbled sections. We had a young team here, potentially the youngest in the peloton, and it was great to see everyone riding with confidence and determination.”
