People’s Choice Classic Tests the Legs Ahead of the Santos Tour Down Under15. January 2017, Adelaide (AUS)A — Road Team
BMC Racing Team lined up at the People’s Choice Classic for a fast and furious 50.6km of circuit racing, before the Santos Tour Down Under gets underway on Tuesday.
Attacks came from the peloton from lap 1 of 22, including an early move of a dozen riders with Damiano Caruso and Danilo Wyss in the mix.
Despite multiple attacks the peloton brought the race back together, after which the sprinter’s teams battled for position in the remaining four laps of the 2.3km circuit.
Caleb Ewan (ORICA-Scott) took the win in a hectic sprint finish, ahead of Sam Bennett and Peter Sagan (both Bora-Hansgrohe).
All of BMC Racing Team’s riders crossed the line safely, including Richie Porte who raced for the first time since the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“It was nice to get things started. It’s not really my kind of racing but the guys stayed around me and at the end of the day it’s just good to get it underway. Having so long off racing I felt a little rusty but this week I’ll get back into it and see what we can do. I think everyone is motivated which is nice to see.”
Sports Director Fabio Baldato said the race went to plan for BMC Racing Team.
“We knew it would be a fast race. Our guys were attentive at the beginning, and there was a break with ten or so riders with Damiano Caruso and Danilo Wyss. But today all I asked of the guys was to stay safe and try to stay together around Richie Porte. Now we can look towards the start of the Santos Tour Down Under after warming the legs up tonight.”
