Müller Wins Elite National Category at Swiss Road Race Championships25. June 2017, Affoltern am Albis (SUI) — Development Team
It was another day on the podium in Switzerland for BMC Development Team as Patrick Müller won the Elite National category after finishing fifth at the Swiss National Road Race Championships with Marc Hirschi rounding out the podium.
BMC Development Team joined forces with BMC Racing Team for the road race with a total of 12 riders, including Marc Hirschi, Patrick Müller, Reto Müller, Martin Schäppi and Mario Spengler, heading to the start line.
With 90km, of the 205.6km course, to go, BMC Racing Team’s Silvan Dillier attacked from the day’s breakaway and put in an impressive performance to take a solo victory.
Dillier’s teammates, Stefan Küng, and Kilian Frankiny then jumped clear from the peloton with 60km to go and with the three podium spots decided heading onto the final lap, the race for the Elite National title began to heat up behind.
Sitting in the third group on the road, Patrick Müller was riding with four others as the bell rang before an additional three riders, including Marc Hirschi, bridged across.
From the group of eight, four riders were in contention for the Elite National title, and in the end, it came down to the final uphill sprint to the line with Patrick Müller finishing fifth overall to the take the jersey ahead of Matteo Badilatti (Velo Club Mendrisio) and Hirschi.
The Winner’s Interview with Patrick Müller
Congratulations, Patrick! Talk us through today’s race.
“First of all, we are super happy for Silvan Dillier and BMC Racing Team. Coming into today, winning the jersey in the pro race was the main goal, and it is great that BMC Development Team was able to play a small part in that.”
“With the three riders from BMC Racing Team out in front, the pace slowed slightly behind, and this allowed me to follow the attack of one rider off the front of the peloton to join a group of three sitting behind Stefan Küng and Kilian Frankiny.”
“Just the two of us were riding for the Elite National title before three other riders, including Marc Hirschi, came across to us. In the end, the race came down to the final sprint with four of us fighting for the win in this category. It was an uphill sprint so directly after the last corner I went up to the front, and I was able to take the win.”
“It was a big day for BMC Racing Team as a whole, so it felt great to be a part of the team’s success and to take a jersey.”
How will it feel to wear the Swiss champion’s jersey?
“It is always nice when you get to represent your country in this way. It makes every race special, and I can’t wait to wear the jersey for the first time.”
Quotes From the Finish Line
“It has been a great few days for me with my U23 Time Trial win and also finishing in the top ten overall here and on the podium in the Elite National category. I think it has been a good test of my condition and I have shown that I am in good shape heading into the next part of the season. I have enjoyed racing at the National Championships, and now I am looking forward to my next races.”
