Marc Hirschi Crowned Swiss U23 Time Trial Champion22. June 2017, Lüterkofen (SUI) — Development Team
BMC Development Team dominated the Swiss U23 Time Trial Championships today with Marc Hirschi taking victory in Lüterkofen and Reto Müller joining him on the podium after finishing third.
As Hirschi rolled off the ramp to start his 38.6km effort, he was chasing the early benchmark set by Justin Paroz (Team Hörmann), and out on the course, his strength and speed against the clock shone through.
Hirschi posted a time of 51:21:33 which was enough to see him move into the hot seat ahead of Paroz before he was eventually crowned Swiss U23 Time Trial Champion.
Müller also put in a strong performance over the two-lap course and set the third-fastest time of the day to round out the podium in Lüterkofen.
The Winner's Interview with Marc Hirschi
Congratulations, Marc! How was it out on the course?
“It was a nice course, but it was pretty hot out there today. We had two laps to cover which included a small climb and I think the most difficult thing about today was the pacing, particularly with the weather.”
Were you expecting to win today?
“I came into the race targeting the podium, but I wasn't expecting to win. I have had a busy race schedule recently with a lot of stage racing, so I haven’t been focusing on time trials as much in training. But I think Tour de Savoie Mont Blanc was a good preparation for today, and it gave me a lot of power in the legs which meant I could pace my effort well.”
How will it feel to wear the Swiss colors at your next time trial?
“I am really looking forward to it, and it will make me feel really proud. It is always a great feeling to wear your national champion’s jersey, and for me, I think it is one of the most beautiful jerseys that you can race in.”
Quotes From the Finish Line
“It was really hot today and the course was a lot longer than we are used to so, it was hard to know how to pace my effort. I tried not to start too hard, but I think I still went a little too fast early on. On the first lap, I felt really good but then 3km into the second lap I started to feel it a bit, and from that moment it was about suffering through it and getting to the finish.”
“Over the last few days, I was still feeling pretty tired following Tour de Savoie Mont Blanc. This morning, we went out for a recon of the loop, and I was feeling much better so, I was confident that I could do something. I didn’t really know what to expect as I hadn't raced against the older guys in the U23 category before. I went into it wanting to give 100% and to see what I could do so I am happy to be on the podium.”
