Lienhard secures second on opening stage in Brittany25. April 2016, Landévant (FRA) — Development Team
The Tour de Bretagne kicked off today with the 158.7km opening stage ending in a bunch sprint that saw BMC Development Team’s Fabian Lienhard securing second place.
It was set to be a sprinter’s stage from the start and the peloton allowed a solo-rider breakaway go away early in the stage. Rémi Cavagna (Klein Constantia) built an eleven-minute advantage before being caught with 40km to go.
The peloton was quickly separated as a group of seven riders including Lienhard were able to distance themselves and head into the final kilometer with a 30 second advantage.
In a tough final sprint for the finish line, it was Frantisek Sisr (Klein Constantia) who found himself in the best position and took the win, while Lienhard was close behind him for second. Rabobank Development Team’s Lennard Hofstede finished third.
Quotes of the Day
Fabian Lienhard: “The final section of the stage was difficult with narrow, twisting roads so I was happy to be in the lead group at that point. I feel good about how I rode today and to be sitting second on the GC with a 30 second advantage over the main peloton. It’s a great position to be in moving into tomorrow’s stage.”
Klaas Lodewyck, Sports Director: “We were expecting a sprint finish in Landévant today and we weren't disappointed. Fabian did a great job to navigate his way through the bunch sprint and now sits in a good position on the GC.”
“I am really happy with how the whole team rode today including Bas Tietema who put in a strong ride at the front to help bring the peloton back together and eventually set up the final sprint.”
