Jempy Drucker Claims Fourth Overall at Dubai Tour4. February 2017, Dubai (U.A.E) — Road Team
Jempy Drucker sprinted to seventh place on stage 5 of the Dubai Tour, his third top ten finish of the race, to secure fourth place on the General Classification.
With stage 4 cancelled with the implementation of the extreme weather protocol, the battle for the victory came down to the 124km flat stage, which was won by race winner Marcel Kittel (QuickStep-Floors).
It took over 50km of racing for the peloton to allow a breakaway to form, with Floris Gerts going clear with four other riders.
The peloton kept them on a tight leash and their advantage did not exceed two minutes. With 9km to go the catch was made and the battle of the sprinters played out.
Kittel took his third stage win of the race, and Drucker proved his sprinting consistency with another top ten finish.
Quotes from the Finish Line
“I wasn’t really focusing on sprints in the winter as my big goal is the Classics so I haven’t done so many sprints in training. But I’m still sprinting well and it’s nice to see that the shape is good at this time of the season. I tried to play it smart in the race. It’s difficult for me to be in the top three on the stages to gain those bonus seconds, so I tried to go in the moves and that helped me to finish fourth overall.”
“It was full gas from the gun today. We had Floris Gerts in the break which was good. I think as a team we rode well. We were aggressive, and every day we had someone in the break. We had good teamwork as the guys helped me a lot in the finales so it’s nice to always be up there and show them that they can have confidence in me.”
Max Sciandri, Sports Director:
“At the end of the day we can be pretty happy with our performance here in Dubai. It’s always hard to know what the form is like this early in the year but every day we had someone in the breakaway, and Jempy Drucker showed he had the sprinting legs. This is a tough race to contest the overall win when you have the fastest sprinters in the world on site. So Jempy’s fourth place on the GC is a good result. He also was close to the intermediate sprint jersey, and Floris Gerts was fourth in the Young Rider classification. it would have been interesting to see how the Hatta Dam stage changed the result that's for sure.”
