Indergand and Flückiger win Swiss Epic Prologue12. September 2016, Zermatt, Switzerland — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team
The Swiss pair of Reto Indergand and Lukas Flückiger stormed the 26km of the Swiss Epic prologue today in Zermatt.
With the Matterhorn in the background, the third edition of the Swiss Epic started today in Wallis. Comprising of six stages, a total of 360 km and 12‘500 of vertical ascent, the Swiss Epic quickly became one of the most famous stage races on the cross-country marathon calendar.
This year, the level of competition is higher than before with current Olympic and World Champion Nino Schurter, cross-country legend José Antonio Hermida and ex-Marathon World Champion Alban Lakata taking place, among others. The BMC MTB Racing Team is present with two teams: one made up of Reto Indergand and Lukas Flückiger and another one made of Martin Fanger and U23 rider from BMC-VC Monte Tamaro Filippo Colombo.
The prologue was quite atypical of marathon races, with 550m of ascent and 2’000m of descent. The pair made of Indergand and Flückiger flew down the hill leaving their first rivals – Daniel Geismayr and Jochen Käss of Centurion Vaude - with a deficit of 1’22’’. Fanger and Colombo took fifth place, 2’01’’ behind their team mates.
Indergand and Flückiger will tackle tomorrow’s stage in leader’s jerseys. More than 90 km and 2’200m of vertical ascent are waiting for them between Zermatt and Leukerbad.
