Get to Know: Martin Schäppi29. October 2016, Santa Rosa, California (USA) — Development Team
Our riders have clocked thousands of hours this season, whether on-race or training, so we thought it was time to put the spotlight on them to find out a little bit more about their lives both on and off their BMC Teammachine SLR01s.
Name: Martin Schäppi
Nickname: Tinu - the nickname of Martin in Swiss German.
Where do you call home: Home for me is a town close to Lausanne in Switzerland
Training base: All of the mountainous 'Canton de Vaud' region as well as in the and also in Valais where the Alps are. It's such a nice place to ride.
How long have you been riding with BMC Development Team: 2016 was my first year riding for the team.
On the bike
Proudest achievement so far: I think my best achievements have all been as junior with a 4th place in GC at GP Rubliland and 7th place in the European ITT Championships. This year was not so easy for me and it was a big step to race my first season as U23 at international races but I would say that in 2016 my proudest achievements are my Swiss Time Trial Champion title and also my 18th place at the World Championships.
Favourite race: For 2016, I would say that Tour de l’Ain, which was my first with the pros, was my favourite. it was so amazing to race in this peleton.
Favourite place to train: Definitely on my home roads but also in Mallorca.
Ultimate goal: Turning professional is sure the big goal but I think learning how to win and becoming a good rider who is capable of riding all kinds of races is also the goal for me.
Off the bike
Favourite film or TV show: Le vélo de Guislain Lambert. For sure, every cyclist need to see it one time even if you don’t speak French.
Favourite musician or band: I don't have one favourite type of music. I like all styles musics but it needs to be energetic.
Favourite food: French fries, vegetables and steak made by my grandmother
Best way to recover: A good beer (in the off season only of course!)
If you didn’t cycle what sport would you do? I think I would do a snow-sport like cross country skiing.
I bet you didn't know that? I have raced every discipline; track, cyclo-cross, mountain biking and road cycling.
