Fast and Furious Opening Stage in Luxembourg4. May 2016, Kayl (LUX) — Development Team
This evening’s opening stage of Flèche du Sud was a predictably fast paced race that saw the peloton reel in a five-rider breakaway before Coen Vermeltfoort (Join-S | De Rijke) won the sprint for the line and the leaders jersey.
Despite it’s short length, the stage wasn’t without challenges and a crash inside the final 2 kilometers saw a number of riders taken down.
Fabian Lienhard was the first BMC Development Team rider across the line in eighth place, while the rest of the team crossed the line safe behind him and without losing any time.
Reaction from inside the race car
Sport Director, Klaas Lodewyck said: “In the last lap everything came back together, and our guys looked in really good shape including Fabian [Lienhard] who was eighth in the sprint.”
“There was a crash just past the two kilometer mark which TJ [Taylor Eisenhart] was involved in but he was really lucky and escaped without damage or injury. I am really happy about how the day went. We don’t have injuries, we haven’t lost any time and we are all safe to start the second day and continue to challenge for results.”
