BMC Development Team Go One-Two on the Podium at Brussel - Opwijk26. February 2017, Opwijk — Development Team
BMC Development Team continued their winning start to the 2017 season with Patrick Müller and Pascal Eenkhoorn going head to head over the closing stages of the race to finish first and second respectively at Brussel - Opwijk.
Müller and Eenkhoorn were part of an early six-rider breakaway that went clear 30km into the day’s 145km route. Despite a chase from the peloton, the group quickly began to carve out a solid advantage.
On the last ascent of the cobbled climb, Putberg, Müller attacked, and alongside Eenkhoorn the pair were able to ride the final 30km of the race out in front.
With two laps to go, Müller and Eenkhoorn began to increase their lead over the chasing group, eventually coming into the final five kilometers with over a minute’s advantage.
Ultimately the race came down to a final sprint for the line between the BMC Development Team duo with Müller the strongest on the day to take victory ahead of Eenkhoorn.
BMC Development Team showed the strength and depth of their roster with six riders finishing inside the top ten on the overall results.
Winner’s Interview with Patrick Müller
Congratulations, Patrick! First win of the season, how are you feeling?
“I am super happy with today’s win and how we rode as a team. I was feeling good from the start to the finish, and that makes me confident for the goals to come.”
Talk us through the final stages of the race when it was just yourself and Pascal Eenkhoorn.
“We felt like we were the two strongest riders in the breakaway and so we decided to attack on the last cobbled climb. I went first, and then Pascal Eenkhoorn bridged the gap, and we went full gas. There wasn’t a lot of time to enjoy the final kilometers, but it was great to finish with Pascal on the podium.”
This is the second win in as many races for BMC Development Team. What impact do you think that will have on everyone?
“I think these results show that we worked hard over the winter and at our training camp. It also highlights that we have a good team spirit and I think that it will give everyone a lot of confidence and motivation going into the rest of the season.”
“It was another tough race with Patrick Müller and I going full gas for most of the day. In the end, it was just the two of us riding out in front, and we were working well together and found a good rhythm. At first, our lead was only 10 seconds but as the guys behind us started to crack it continued to grow. It’s always a bit tricky having to race against your teammate but in the end, Patrick was just a bit stronger than me and he deserved this victory.”
“Already this has been an incredible start to our season, and we are showing that the whole team is super strong and that everyone is capable of winning.”
Sports Director, Klaas Lodewyck:
“Everyone on the team did a great job today. Patrick Müller and Pascal Eenkhoorn both looked super strong out in front all day and then were able to carry this form to the line. The rest of the guys worked hard in the main bunch behind them and were able to control the race with confidence. It was a really good day for the team, and I am happy with everyone. To have six riders in the top eight is really positive and I hope these performances continue as we progress through our season.”
