Tom Bohli tested his legs in the breakaway at the 50.6km People’s Choice Classic criterium, the prelude to the Santos Tour Down Under.

Bohli made a move in the first of 22 laps and formed a three-rider breakaway, that eventually swelled to seven riders and gained a maximum one-minute advantage on the bunch.

With a strong field of sprinters on the start line, the sprinters’ teams picked up the pace at the halfway mark and quickly gained on the breakaway as the laps progressed.

With four laps remaining, the breakaway was caught and the battle at the front of the bunch began.

Defending Santos Tour Down Under champion Richie Porte remained out of trouble at the back of the bunch as up ahead, Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) sprinted to the win.

After a rest day on Monday, the first UCI WorldTour race of the season gets underway on Tuesday.

Quotes from the Finish Line

Tom Bohli:

“I had it in my mind to do something tonight in the race. It has been a very long off season for me so that’s why it was important for me to try something. Going into the breakaway was a goal so I’m pretty happy with that. My legs were really good and I don’t feel tired at all now. I know I need to work on my sprinting peaks but overall, my shape is really good. I think I will be able to do some good work for Richie Porte at the race and I’ll come out much stronger.”

Richie Porte:

“You always have to be careful at a criterium so it was nice to come through that unscathed and blow some cobwebs out, and not crash. It was good to see Tom Bohli off the front tonight. We will just try and get through the next days as best we can. We have to stay up there and not lose time in those first few stages which is easier said than done but I’m looking forward to Friday and Saturday, the big GC days.”
