Colombo Holds on to his Swiss Champion Title25. juin 2018, Andermatt, Switzerland — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team
One year after his win at the U23 Swiss Championships, Filippo Colombo was bursting with happiness yesterday; he had just won the right to race with the red and white jersey for another year.
“Tough day out there!” were Colombo’s first words after he crossed the finish line after eight laps of the demanding course of Andermatt. But relief and happiness quickly took over: “I am super happy with the win. It wasn’t an easy one… I studied a lot and sat university exams lately so didn’t have much time for training and I could definitely feel the lack of kilometers today.”
So Colombo had to dig deep to shake loose Joris Ryf and Vital Albin, his main competitors. The trio and three other riders had ridden away from the rest of the field early in the race with none of them showing clear superiority. The finishing order was only decided in the last lap and Colombo eventually crossed the line a few seconds ahead of Ryf and Albin who took silver and bronze respectively.
Strong of this win and done with exams, Colombo can now fully focus on the second half of the season which starts in two weeks with the fourth round of the Mercedez-Bens UCI MTB World Cup in Val di Sole, Italy. The Ticinese rider is currently second in the overall classification after his 8th, 5th and 2nd places in Stellenbosch, Albstadt and Nove Mesto na Morave.
