The reigning Ironman Asian Pacific Champion demonstrated his top shape to add to his season tally by taking another outstanding victory at IM70.3 Sunshine Coast. The BMC Pro Triathlete took the title in a blistering winning time of 3:29:47. Steven McKenna (3:29:59) finished second with Nicholas Free (3:31:16) rounding out the podium.
Strong in all three disciplines
Max Neumann started his home race well, exiting the water in 4th place as part of the lead group. In the opening stages on the bike a leading group of seven was formed. Neumann was one of main contributors setting the pace in front and half way the leaders were holding a 1'20 advantage on the first chasers. After 90k Max jumped off his bike first and after a fast transition set off as co-leader to start his closing half marathon. During the first hour of the run Neumann, McKenna and Free opened up a gap on the rest of the field. At the 18k mark it was Free who was the first one to drop off the pace. Eventually Max put in his attack on the final uphill stretch with 800m to go. The BMC Pro Triathlete immediately opened up a gap and held his advantage to take another outstanding victory on home soil.
On track for Ironman World Championship in Hawaii
"It was a great day", Neumann reflected afterwards. "I had a really good feeling in all three disciplines. It was an awesome little battle on the run and managed to get away on the final hill into Mooloolaba about 800m out. All is looking great though for October, two big weeks coming up and then off to the Big Island".
