Brenner wins opening stage of Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali

Marco Brenner won the first stage of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali. The German attacked on the last descent with 4.5 kilometers to go, staying ahead of the chasing peloton.

“After practicing the descent two times during the reconnaissance and discussing it in the meeting this morning, we knew I needed to be in the top 5 positions to start the downhill,” Brenner said about his victory.

“Hannes Wilksch did a superb last pull for me, and then I could follow the wheel of a Visma rider before launching my attack. What was discussed in the meeting worked out perfectly today.”

Sports Director Morgan Lamoisson agreed with Brenner that the plan was executed perfectly: “Luc Wirtgen was in the breakaway, and the other guys protected Marco in the final climbs to ensure he was in the best position for the descent, where he had to attack. We weren’t sure if he could make it to the finish, but this was the only strategy to win, and Marco finished off a perfect teamwork.”

This marks Marco's first professional victory and the second for the team in 2024.

“Since I was a junior, I have always enjoyed climbs and technical downhills, but among the pros, you really need to be in top shape to perform well in climbs. This year I started feeling better and stronger in the finales, and I had already attempted these attacks in Bessèges and Ardèche, without success.”

“This time, it worked, and it is also a result of trying and gaining experience.”

“I am thrilled to achieve my first professional win with this team, which believed in me so much. I have been waiting for this victory for so long, so it feels like a relief.”

Finally, Brenner had some kind words for his teammates: “The team was incredible today; they did such a good job of keeping me in a good position, especially in the chaotic finale, allowing me to conserve my energy.”

Brenner is also the first race leader in Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, wearing the leader’s jersey in stage 2.
