Fine Start in Albstadt With Short Track and U23 Races

19. Mai 2018, Albstadt, Germany — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team

A little bit of Mountain Bike history was written on Friday night with the introduction of the Short Track format. The three Elite riders were qualified for the event and scored another strong team performance. On Saturday, Filippo Colombo finished 5th of the U23 XCO race.

The Short Track is a short and fast race reserved to the 40 best cross-country riders. Not only points for the overall classification are awarded according to the results but the start positions for the XCO race are also being allocated. With their results, Lars Forster, Reto Indergand and Titouan Carod will be called 5th, 9th and 13th on the start line on Sunday.

Lars Forster really enjoyed the new race format: “It’s tactical, it’s fast and furious; I like it!” No doubt that his cyclo-cross experience helped him to fight for position in the field.

Colombo 5th of the U23 race

The U23 riders were in action on Saturday afternoon. Some rain showers before and during the race made the race very slippery and most riders struggled with little mistakes. In fourth position and catching up on the Danish rider racing in third position, Filippo Colombo was a victim of the slippery terrain: “I had him in sight and was determined to catch him but I lost traction in one of the wooden burms. I didn’t only loose a few seconds but my focus as well. It took me a few minutes to get back into race mode.” Peter Fagerhaug of Norway, winner in Stellenbosch and leader of the World Cup caught Colombo and both of them rode together until the last lap. The Swiss Champion ended up crossing the line in 5th place which also means a 7th place in the overall classification of the Mercedes Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.
