Our Innovation Station; the Impec Lab

Think of Switzerland and you probably think of precision watches, high-quality engineering, chocolate and alphorns. Or, maybe brilliant alpine passes and never-ending singletrack trails come to mind. At BMC, we don’t do watches, or chocolate, and sadly we don’t do alphorns, but we certainly don’t have a shortage of highly-skilled, precision engineers. We’re surrounded by truly incredible riding, and abundance of experiences to spark innovative projects, with a wealth of knowledge and the facility to support them.

The Impec Lab is BMC’s portal to the future, an experimental playground that allows us to reach beyond what we see today. Located in a small Swiss town between the Jura Mountain Range and the Swiss Alps, here fully-automated machines and highly-skilled craftsmen have been producing carbon framesets from scratch since 2007. Developed using unique assembly and construction methods, the knowledge gleaned from Impec frame production has fostered unique skillsets at BMC, especially in the areas of load-specific carbon fiber types, weave technologies, resin matrices, layup schedules and tube shapes.

Today, the Impec Lab continues to explore advanced concepts in bicycle design, using the same advanced resources we’ve been working with for nearly a decade. The results are unique to BMC; the ability to explore major advancements in technologies with a small investment in time, and major returns in ride experiences.

Once Upon an Engineer’s Dream

Equipped with a host of precision machinery tools, carbon development resources, and performance evaluation instruments - this state-of-the-art facility is a playground for mad-scientist, composite engineers. What makes it extra special for BMC engineers, is that everything they’d expect to find spread across various facilities around the world, is right here under the one roof. As a result, the development teams at BMC are in complete control of turning their ideas into reality, at lightspeed.

Altering the Production Curve

The standard bicycle production model suffers from two consistent hurdles: time constraints and the often limiting capabilities of manufacturing centers. But what if these barriers were removed? What if a resource existed where tech advancements came a little quicker? Where exploration had no boundaries? The Impec Lab is such a place. Rideable prototypes are created within days, explored on our local roads and trails, validated by our professional athletes and brought to completion here at our headquarters in Switzerland. The advantage of having the Impec Lab at our disposal means that we can dictate the details behind series production. It also ensures the level of quality control necessary to deliver the ride characteristics that are the cornerstone of BMC’s Swiss, precision-engineering reputation.

Impec Lab Projects

‘The proof is in the pudding’ as they say - so here is a small selection of projects that have come from the Lab. Some of these are exclusive to professional athletes on our Racing Teams, but all have contributed to the development of products that will represent the BMC brand in bike shops around the world in the near future.

A customized paint job for BMC Racing Team’s Rohan Dennis to celebrate being in the lead at the Tour de France 2015.

BMC Racing Team, Rohan Dennis’ Hour Record bike with an integrated, aerodynamic cockpit.

The Granfondo RBX, modified and custom-painted Granfondo GF01 (caliper) framesets for the BMC Racing Team at Paris-Roubaix 2015.

Impec Lab Concept Bike, Eurobike 2015; an all-inclusive, highly modular, highly integrated bike to get you thinking about the future of road cycling.
