Our riders have clocked thousands of hours this season, whether on-race or training, so we thought it was time to put the spotlight on them to find out a little bit more about their lives both on and off their BMC Teammachine SLR01s.

Rider profile

Name: Mario Spengler

Age: 19

Nickname: Some of the guys call me Stannard

Where do you call home: I live and train in a small village close to Schaffhausen, Switzerland

How long have you been riding with BMC Development Team: 2016 was my first year with the team.

On the bike

Proudest achievement so far: Being part of the U23 Swiss National Team at the recent World Championshis in Doha plus finishing the Junior race Three Days of Axel in a 2nd place in GC was also nice.

Favourite thing about riding in the peloton: I have a lot of fun on the technical downhills and I also enjoy the feeling of riding, and winning, as a team.

Favourite race: For sure I like all the Classic races like Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.

Favourite place to train: I really like to train at home as well as in the Swiss Alps.

Ultimate goal: My ultimate goal is to become a good pro rider and to one day win one of the Classics.

Off the bike

Favourite film or TV show: The Mentalist

Favourite musician or band: I like all kinds of music. It really depends on how I feel me or what I'm doing.

Favourite Food: Anything my Mom cooks for me.

Best way to recover after a race: Eating some good food after the race made by Patrice, our Head Soigneur

If you didn’t cycle what sport would you do? I think I would try to become a professional cross country skier.

I bet you didn't know that? As well as cycling for BMC Development Team, I also have an apprenticeship as a design engineer.
