Darwin Atapuma of the BMC Racing Team was part of the breakaway Wednesday in a short stage that featured six categorized climbs and a summit finish.
Atapuma was part of a group of more than a dozen riders who ventured off on the first climb of the 138-kilometer stage. Mikel Landa (Astana Pro Team) survived out of the escapees to win the stage solo. His teammate, Fabio Aru, was runner-up 1:22 later, and took the overall lead.
Atapuma went on to finish 16th, 4:19 back. Teammate Samuel Sánchez, who finished 37th on the day, is the BMC Racing Team's best-placed rider overall in 19th, 11:07 behind.
