Atapuma, van Garderen and a third BMC Racing Team rider, Dylan Teuns, were part of a select group of 17 that formed at the front when crosswinds split the peloton. On the final climb, the leading group was cut to seven. Van Garderen and Atapuma initially missed the selection, but rejoining on the downhill run-in to the finish. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team) soloed to his second stage win this week while Atapuma finished ninth and van Garderen was 10th.

Richie Porte (Team Sky) assumed the race lead from Bart De Clercq (Lotto-Soudal) while Atapuma is 43 seconds behind with two days to go.
