At IWT Jong Maar Moeding, the first of three races for BMC Development Team this week, Nathan Van Hooydonck finish sixth after spending the day in the action at the front of the race.

Van Hooydonck and teammate Pascal Eenkhoorn were part of a large early breakaway but with structure of the lead group constantly shifting it wasn’t until the final 20 kilometers that final decisive move was made.

The race then came down to a battle between the nine riders out in front with Van Hooydonck eventually sprinting for sixth from inside the second group of riders on the road, seven seconds behind race winner, Jerome Baugnies (Wanty - Groupe Gobert)

Quotes of day

Sport director Klaas Lodewyck said: “It was a really hard race today with a lot of short climbs and cobbled sections over the 185 kilometer parcours. There was also three pro teams racing so it was not an easy day for the guys.”

“The pace was really fast right from the beginning and when a large group of riders distanced themselves from the peloton we had Nathan and Pascal in that group. We had a little bit of bad luck with Pascal getting a flat but we knew it would be important for him to stay in front and he was able to do that. Pascal and Nathan started working together really well and in the end Pascal gave it everything and was able to put Nathan in a good position for the final section of the race.”

“Nathan was out in front with eight other riders before a group of three were able to pull away and stay out in front all the way to line. Nathan was still looking strong behind them and was able to sprint for sixth place against tough competition!”

Nathan Van Hooydonck said: “The race went pretty good for me and the team. I knew from last year that a move could happen really early on in the race and that’s exactly what happened.”

“In the final there was a small group of guys in front and I was able bridge the gap over to them. Three guys then attacked but I wasn’t able to accelerate at the same pace they did. I gave it everything I could today and I was up there in the final. I managed to get sixth in the end so I am really satisfied with the result.”
