Nathan Van Hooydonck made is back to back trip to the podium for BMC Development Team after finishing second behind Dan Meijers (Cyclingteam Join’s - De Rijke) at the Dutch one-day race Kernen Omloop Echt-Susteren.

A fast paced opening 80km of the day saw the peloton reduced to a select group of 70 riders before the bunch was split again with Van Hooydonck, Patrick Müller and Pascal Eenkhoorn making it into the leading group.

Eventually only Van Hooydonck and Müller remained in the breakaway alongside three riders from Cyclingteam Join’s - De Rijke and the group went on to launch attack after attack over the final finishing circuit.

With one technical corner to go before the finishing straight, Meijers accelerated off the front of the group to take victory while the rest of the riders battled it out in a sprint for the line with Van Hooydonck claiming the second spot on the podium and Müller crossing the line in sixth.

Quotes from the Finish Line

Nathan Van Hooydonck:

“The race was pretty hard today with a lot of wind and twists and turns so we had to stay up at the front with the whole team. Suddenly after 80km, I turned around and there was only 70 guys left so that was really good for us. We knew going into the final section with a big peloton would have made for a nervous race. A big group then went off the front with Pascal Eenkhoorn, Patrick and myself before it finally came down to just me and Patrick and the three riders from Cyclingteam Join’s - De Rijke.”

“We kept turning really well as a group and Patrick was also riding really strong. I’ve been in a heavy block of training for the European Championships and have just come back from a camp with the Belgian national team so I was feeling that a little bit in my legs today and I think that was what made the difference between first and second.”

“The last couple of kilometers were really fast with lots of attacking. It is a shame that I couldn't win but second is not a bad result at all and it definitely shows I am in good form for Europeans. This race was a great opportunity to show my shape and I think that I am in a good position plus I am happy to give the team a nice result as we near the end of the season.”
