Uplace BMC Power Women Share the Podium at the IM70.3 Brazil8. April 2015, Brazil — Triathlon Team
Two teammates, Helle Frederiksen and Sophie Goos, shared the podium with 1st nd and 2nd place finishes on Sunday at the Latin American Championship, IM70.3 Brazil.
The Latin American Championship title is hotly contested, but it was a matter of chasing Helle Frederiksen from the start to the finish. Frederiksen left the water (1,9km: 25:27) together with Chura Haley (USA) with their nearest rivals two minutes behind. On the bike, Helle started off fast. After 9km she already led by 2' over Chura. Her lead grew steadily up to 7'27" over Chura by T2 and 7'46" lead over Sofie Goos (90km: 2:10:52). With the 2nd fastest run of the event (21,1km: 1:24:24), the Dane dominated the race to the end with an eventual lead of 13' over teammate Sofie Goos.
Helle Frederiksen is clearly very happy with this continental title: “Winning this race really mattered to me. The start of the year has been a little unsettled with numerous changes in location and a little niggle but today I was hungry to put all that aside and secure my place on the start line for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships. It's always special to win a race from start to finish. I felt great throughout, the big lead off the bike allowed me to really control the run and take my foot off the gas early on. It's fantastic to share the podium with Uplace-BMC team member, Sofie Goos. We're so far from team base of Belgium but able to put the team colours 1-2 on the podium.”
Sofie Goos enjoyed this unique team performance: “Beforehand, I said to myself a podium finish would be fantastic and a top 5 would be decent. Finishing second behind Helle is a unique experience for our team, which makes me really happy. My swim leg was not so strong, I came out of the water in 10th position, but on the bike I quickly moved to 5th position and by T2 I was 3rd closely behind Chura Haley. On the run I quickly moved up to second place. In the last lap Brennan Morrey Ruth in 3rd came closer, but I pushed hard and controlled my 2nd place. I am very happy with this result for my first race of the season. My next big race will Ironman Texas in May.“
