Stage 1 of Triptyque Ardennais saw Taylor Eisenhart, Nathan Van Hooydonck, Bas Tietema, Pascal Eenkhoorn and Sam Dobbs make the day’s breakaway after over an hour of racing.

The large group of 28 riders looked set to contest a sprint finish at the line but it was not meant to be as Elias Van Breussegem (Vérandas Willems) attacked of the front of the group to take solo victory.

Dobbs was the first BMC Development Team rider to cross the line finishing seventh in the chasing group, 14 seconds behind race leader Van Breussegem. Eenkhoorn also finished inside the group alongside Dobbs and Tietema and now sits fourth on the General Classification and first in the race’s Youth Classification.

Quotes of the day

Sport director, Klaas Lodewyck said: “With 15km to go it looked perfect for us. We had five guys still in the first group with 24 riders at that point. Van Breussegem from Verandas Willems then attacked and the group started to chase but it was a bit chaotic and he was able stay in front with 15 seconds.”

“At the end, Pascal [Eenkhoorn], Sam [Dobbs] and Bas [Tietema] finished in the first chasing group and with Pascal taking some seconds during the day he is now leading the Youth Classification. Other team had no riders in the break so it was a good day in that sense for us but it wasn't the result we were hoping. Tomorrow is another day though and another chance to go for the win.”

Pascal Eenkhoorn said: “It was a hard stage, immediately from the start with lot of attacks. We as team covered all of them and just before halfway we were in a break away with 5 of us. It was a nice course with ups and downs all the way. Not far from the finish, the rider from Veranda Willems attacked and we panicked a bit and made slight mistakes. I was feeling good over the whole stage and ready to battle with the team over the coming 2 days.”
