At Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the team’s second race of the week, Nathan Van Hooydonck was once again competitive in the final stages of the day to secure a top five finish.

BMC Development Team were in amongst the action for most of the day with Van Hooydonck putting in a huge effort to close the gap to the day’s final breakaway.

Eventually, it was Elian Van Breussegem (Veranda’s Willems Cycling Team) who took victory after a solo effort over the final 20 kilometers, while Van Hooydonck finished fifth in Zottegem after sprinting for the line against the remaining breakaway riders.

Quotes of the day

Sport director, Klaas Lodewyck said: “First of all, it was a really hard race today! We started with heavy rain, wind and then after 18 kilometers we had the first climb and it didn’t really stop until the end.”

“It was a fast race with lots of groups going off the front of the peloton but eventually Pascal and Pavel went into quite a big group of riders who went extended a gap at the front but eventually it came back together.”

“In the end, Nathan was able to cross the bridge, almost 40 seconds, to a group of 6 riders. You could see this took the energy out of him for the final but he did a really good race so it was a positive day for us.”

Nathan Van Hooydonck said: “The start, with the heavy rain was pretty cold but after the rain stopped the race was on! There were a lot of attacks and we were involved in every important one. The guys kept me in a really good position going into the Taaienberg which is a crucial point in the race. If you are too far back there then you are never going to come back.”

“I was feeling strong on Eikenberg so I was confident that I would be in a good position going into the final. I saved a little bit because Pascal and Pavel were doing a good job going into the attacks. Then in the final, I bridged across to a breakaway with another rider. I had to pull really hard so that took a lot of energy out of me so I wasn’t able to follow the solo winner and after my earlier efforts I was a little too far back in the sprint. Of course I wanted to win today, that’s what really counts, but I am pretty satisfied with fifth.”
