Successful inaugural Redbull Velodux in Estavayer-le-Lac

8. November 2014 — MTB Team

Last Saturday, Estavayer-le-Lac was host of the first edition of the Cyclocross race Redbull Velodux.

World class athletes from most of the mayor cycling disciplines, such as XCO Mountainbike World champion Julien Absalon, former Road World champion Philippe Gilbert and Swiss Cyclocross-Champion Lukas Flückinger took on the demanding course around the castle and the border of Lake Neuchâtel.

Taking place to a backdrop of blue skies, the ground was freshly muddy from downpours the night before. This was no ordinary cyclocross race, but held as a relay race, encouraging the cyclists to really put the hammer down for one lap, before sending their teammate out for the next lap while they recovered in the pen. The race started with some lung-busting excitement when participants had to run to their bikes and sling them over their shoulders to sprint up the 140 steps to the Estavayer le Lac castle. However, this all got a bit complicated when former Fourcross World Champion Roger Rinderknecht accidentally took Danilo Wyss’s bike and was already half way up the first part of the stairs before he even noticed! Julien Absalson ended up at the end of the bunch after this chaotic start, but caught up brilliantly to finish third with his BMC MTB Racing team partner Ralph Näf. Absalon was obviously happy to be back on the bike after his off season break. “The Mix of traditional Cyclo-Cross sections and unusual parts (downhill stairs section) made it a lot of fun, but my legs will probably hurt even more than after a more traditional Cyclocross Race”, he said with a smile.

The winning team was comprised of Lars Foster and Michi Wildhaber, in front of his cousin Marcel Wildhaber and Andri Frischknecht. Lukas Flückinger finished 10th with his brother Mathias and the road stars of the BMC Racing Team Philippe Gilbert and Danilo Wyss fought bravely to finish 15th.
