Successful Cyclo-cross Weekend for Lukas Flückiger

5. December 2016, Grenchen, Switzerland — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team

A win and a third place in one weekend? Lukas Flückiger has started his cyclocross season on a very positive note!

The BMC MTB Racing Team athlete headed to the French part of Switzerland last weekend for two international cyclo-cross races that took place in Nyon Sion on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The ground was dry and frozen in some areas, making for very fast and tactical racing.

Flückiger came out as the strongest man on Saturday after a long fight with two cyclocross specialists Simon Zahner (SUI) and Yorben Van Tichelt (BEL), and MTB rider Nicholas Rohrbach (SUI). In the last lap, he placed a strong attack and opened up a gap that relieved the pressure of a sprint finish.

The same contenders were on the start line on Sunday in Wallis, ready for a second round. However, Julien Taramarcaz, arguably the best cyclo-cross rider in Switzerland, was keen to win on homesoil and score UCI points for his upcoming races in Belgium. He didn’t disappoint his fans, taking control of the race from the very start. Five men were able to follow his his pace until mid-race at which point he broke away with a decisive attack. Behind him, the little group disintegrated and in the end Flückiger and Rohrbach entered the last straight together and fought for second place.

“I didn’t even sprint in the end today” commented Flückiger after the race in Sion “I came here to win, so second or third place didn’t matter to me. I’m a little disappointed,  it’s rare to have the opportunity to race against Taramarcaz before the national championships. It was probably my only chance to beat him and I missed it. But all in all I’m content with my weekend: a win and a third place isn’t bad at all. Moreover I feel good, the legs were good and I had no issues. I only miss a little bit of practice in the cyclo-cross specific moves: getting on and off the bike, running…etc. It’s something you can only train well with the pressure of racing so it will come in the next few weeks.”

Reto Indergand also started his season this weekend in Sion where he came 12th.

Both Flückiger and Indergand will be racing the EKZ CrossTour in Eschenbach next Sunday.
