The opening stage of Ronde de l’Oise saw Fabian Lienhard finish third after a final sprint from inside the day’s late breakaway.

The peloton kept tight control of the race for the majority of stage, chasing down attack after attack, until 50 kilometers when a large group of 15 riders were able to distance themselves from the main the bunch.

Despite the peloton chasing hard behind them, the breakaway were able to stay out in front until the finishing line in Ribercourt. Lienhard was in contention during the final sprint, crossing the line in third place, behind race leader Martijn Budding (Rabobank Development Team).

After taking bonus time in the day’s two intermediate sprints, Lienhard will head into tomorrow’s stage in second place on the General Classification.

Quotes of the Day

Sport director Klaas Lodewyck said: “It was a really good start for us today! With around 50 kilometers to go, Fabian made it into a large group of 15 riders who extended a maximum advantage of 55 seconds over the peloton. On the last climb the breakaway split into three separate groups but in the end they all came back together for the final sprint. Earlier in the stage Fabian took three bonus seconds and we are now in a perfect position to continue our racing here at Ronde de l’Oise. It was also good to see Bram back in the bunch.”

Fabian Lienhard said: “I feel great after today’s stage especially after some tough training following a race with the swiss national team. I was feeling really good on the bike today. Although I wasn’t the fastest in the final sprint, I took some bonus seconds in the intermediate sprints so I am sitting second on the GC. It is definitely a good result and a great position to be in for the rest of the race.”
