BMC Racing Team's Tejay van Garderen continued his climb up the general classification Thursday at Vuelta al Pais Vasco by finishing in the front group on another challenging day in the mountains.

Van Garderen finished 11th in the 162.2-kilometer race over seven categorized climbs to move from 10th to seventh overall. He remained 10 seconds off the lead of Sergio Henao (Team Sky).

Teammate Samuel Sánchez, who had won race finishes here in 2010, 2011 and on his way to winning the race overall in 2012, placed 19th and slipped from fifth to 14th overall. He is 30 seconds off the lead.

Joaquim Rodriguez won his second straight stage – and Katusha Team's 11th race in the past 13 days – and joins Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) as one of two riders tied on time with Henao.

Friday's 155.5-km stage is another mountain-top finish and includes eight other categorized climbs.
