BMC Racing Team's Samuel Sánchez and Tejay van Garderen climbed their way into fifth and 10th place overall Wednesday at Vuelta al Pais Vasco on the strength of top 10 finishes.

On the 170.7-kilometer stage that included eight categorized climbs, Sánchez was seventh, seven seconds behind stage winner Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha Team), while van Garderen finished 10th, a further three seconds back.

With three days of the race to go, Sánchez is seven seconds off the lead of Sergio Henao (Team Sky) and van Garderen is 10 seconds behind. Thursday's stage is the first of two straight mountain-top finishes, followed by an 18.3-km individual time trial on the final day.
