Liz Blatchford Starts the Season with a Solid Second Place at IM70.3 Putrajaya

4. April 2016 — Triathlon Team

The BMC-Etixx Pro Triathlon Team star got her season off to a good start at the Malaysian half Ironman. Extreme conditions with temperatures in the high thirties made it a really tough race, but didn’t stop Blatchford to fight for the win until the end.

Blatchford put herself in the mix for the win from the very beginning, nestled among the leading trio and entering T1 in second position. Once on the bike, the Australian began to apply some pressure and close the gap with Vodickova and entered T2 with a sizeable gap over the rest of the field. On the run, Blatchford started to suffer in the high humidity, failed to keep up with Vodickova - and came home three minutes after her in second place.

Blatchford was satisfied with her performance: "Chuffed to get the first race of my season out of the way and come home with a solid 2nd place here in Putrajaya IM 70.3. The first one always hurts and it did today, especially in the crazy Malaysian heat and humidity. But still I really loved being back out racing after 5 months on the side lines. I think the race is a good starting point for me to build on from here. The body seems to have held up well so I'll be ready to get stuck into some solid training in a few days. Next up I have Vietnam 70.3 in 5 weeks and then Cairns Ironman in June".
