High Ambitions for UCI MTB World Championships30. June 2016, Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team
Beginning of July and World Champs time already? Yes! Because of the Olympics, the UCI MTB World Championships were move forward to July - they are taking place this week in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic.
Four of the five BMC MTB Racing Teams riders have been selected to represent their countries: Julien Absalon for France and Lars Forster, Reto Indergand and Lukas Flückiger for Switzerland. Despite the fact that they’ll be riding in different jerseys, these four riders have two things in common: they consider the race course one of the best of the MTB circuit and they have high ambitions for the weekend.
Julien Absalon: “I want the jersey back!”
“The World Championships isn’t an easy event to manage this year with only five weeks to go to the Olympics. But it’s World Championships, so definitely an important goal. The course is fun with lots of roots and I love racing there even if I still haven’t won on Czech Republic soil. I’ll get another shot at it this weekend, I want the jersey back!”
Lars Forster: “My goal? The top five!”
“I have great memories of Nove Mesto where I won my first World Cup last year in the U23 category. The race course is one of my favorites; it is fast, hard and technical at the same time. I hope to crack the top five on Sunday. Before that, I’ll take part to the Team Relay with the Swiss Team and gold is definitely our goal.”
Lukas Flückiger: “I’m extremely happy to be there”
“Following a disappointing first part of the season, I am extremely happy and proud to be part of the Swiss Team this week. I worked hard after La Bresse and I’ve seen improvements so I am feeling pretty good. I had one of my best World Cup results ever at Nove Mesto, finishing third in 2013 after a long battle with Julien (Absalon) and Nino Schurter so I like the place and the course. You have to keep focused for the entire race to avoid easy mistakes and mechanicals.”
Reto Indergand: “Hope my knee is okay”
“My preparation for the Worlds was disrupted by a crash 10 days ago in a race in Germany. I got five stitches on my knee and had to rest for a few days. I am feeling better and better and it should be okay for Sunday. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my participation to the Team Relay which I would have been proud to do. My goal remains the same as before my crash; I’ll race for a top 10.”
All four riders plan to race their Fourstroke 01’s, the BMC full-suspension bike. “It’s the perfect bike for this technical playground” according to Absalon.
