The BMC Racing Team announced Monday the addition of trainer Neal Henderson to its Performance Science Division.

The hiring of Henderson – a past USA Cycling Coach of the year who was awarded the National Science award for coaching from the United States Olympic Committee in 2011 – adds to an already impressive list of experts within the Performance Science Division, said BMC Racing Team President/General Manager Jim Ochowicz.

"Our commitment to sports science continues to evolve into where we are today from where we were three years ago when we started the division," Ochowicz said. "We started incorporated coaching into our own domain to provide it to all of our athletes. In conjunction with that is the nutritional aspect, the race selection process and all of the things that encompass performance, all contained in one group.

"Neal is someone who has a background in coaching some of our athletes when they were younger and he has also come to us with some new hires," Ochowicz said. "So it made sense for him to join our group because he is familiar with some of the athletes and is very adaptable to working with others.

Henderson will join the BMC Racing Team's three other trainers: Dario Broccardo, Marco Pinotti and Dr. Max Testa. Physiologist/Trainer Dr. David Bailey and Nutritionist Judith Haudum round out the six-member team that is contained in one group under the direction of BMC Racing Team Sporting Manager Allan Peiper. Their roles cover many aspects – from evaluation to goal-setting and achievement, to training and establishment of recovery and nutritional guidelines. The group also provides team management and sport directors with relevant data to be used for race selections and adjustments. They also plan and coordinate training camps and reconnaissance rides of important stages and key sections of races.

Pinotti has been a member of the Performance Science Division since his retirement from cycling and the BMC Racing Team at the end of the 2013 season. The past multiple-time Italian national time trial champion said the group's most important aspect is its pragmatic approach and ability to adapt and implement science-based method to real world.

"The fact that we come from different backgrounds and also different nationalities is important," he said. "We want to have multiple points of view and a wider approach to various issues. We try to help and support every event, but obviously the team time trial at the world championships last year and the world hour record by Rohan Dennis this year were likely moments where the whole group gave its maximum contribution."
