Helle Fredricksen wins the inaugural Challenge Bahrai8. December 2014 — Triathlon Team
The Uplace-BMC triathlete returned to the winners’ circle today in spectacle style to claim the world’s richest half-Iron distance prize purse and title of Challenge Bahrain champion.
After a descent swim, she settled soon in third position during her bike leg to start her run just seconds behind leading woman Annabel Luxford. She then put the hammer down right from the beginning and to finally shake off her last follower Jodie Swallow just 5km into the run. At the finish line she increased her lead up to 2:25 to win in an impressive time of 3:55:50 in front of Rachel Joyce and Jodie Swallow. Her time would have been even a Top 20 result in the men’s race. Well done Helle!
Helle was quite emotional after her biggest win of the season. “It was a relief to cross the line! I couldn’t have dreamed of a better way to finish my 2014 season, its crazy (…) it is not that I am better than the others here, but I had a better day than them. I just got it right on the day” said Helle and expressed like many other athletes also her satisfaction with the organization of the event “This setting, what they‘ve done and how we’ve been treated – I’ve felt like a queen. It’s an amazing set up and everything was really professional,” said Helle.
Helle was not the only one to give the uplace-BMC team a reason to celebrate. After a long season Liz Blatchford and Romain Guillaume ended their season in style by finishing 3rd and 4th in the SunSmart IRONMAN Western Australia this Sunday. Liz set a furious pace in the swimming leg to come out of the water with a small gap on all her competitors. However the page turned then on the bike leg, when she received an eight minutes penalty due to drafting. She finished the race in 3rd place behind new course record holder Britta Martin and Maureen Hufe.
Romain Guillaume showed a strong performance to finished fourth behind winner and countryman Denis Chevrot. With these results of the weekend the Uplace-BMC Pro Triathlon ends their 2014 season with an impressive 21 victories and 46 podium finishes.
