Flückiger and Indergand winners of the 2016 Swiss Epic

17. September 2016, Verbier, Switzerland — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team

With four stage wins and the overall classification, the BMC MTB Racing Team 1 was definitely the strongest pair of the field.

Lukas Flückiger and Reto Indergand raised their arms when crossing the finish line in Verbier. They were “only” third of the day but just won the third edition of the Swiss Epic. Their main competitors of the Centurion Vaude and the Scott – Odlo MTB Racing Team didn’t manage to close the gap that the BMC pair had built throughout the week.

Lukas Flückiger is all smiles: “The week went really well. It actually started perfectly with the prologue win and then we built up some good time on our main rivals. We had two harder days on Thursday and today but we had a good advantage and could manage it well. I’m happy to finish my season like this. 2016 wasn’t my year but this win gives me the motivation to train even harder this winter to come back strong next year.”

Reto Indergand is a happy but relieved man: “Lukas was very strong this week and it wasn’t always easy to keep up with him. But I gave all to hang on and I’m happy it worked out! This season was my best so far – he won the overall classification of the Swiss Cup and cracked the World Cup top-10 on three occasions – and I’m super happy to finish here with a win and to share it with Lukas and the entire team.”

The second BMC MTB Racing Team pair of Martin Fanger and Filippo Colombo finished 10th of the overall classification.

For Alex Moos, Team Manager of the BMC MTB Racing Team, this win is a great satisfaction. "To win such a race takes way more than two good riders. It takes a whole bunch of people from the mechanics to a masseuse and a cook to put the riders in the best possible conditions. This victory is the victory of the entire team."

Reto Indergand and Martin Fanger will keep riding their mountain bikes for three more weeks to end their season at Roc d’Azur, France while Lukas Flückiger will take a break before starting training for the cyclo-cross season.
