Flückiger and Indergand anchor their lead at Swiss Epic13. September 2016, Leukerbad, Switzerland — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team
One day after winning the prologue of the Swiss Marathon stage race, the Swiss duo dominated the first stage of the race that took the riders across Wallis, from Zermatt to Leukerbad.
The plan was simple at the start this morning: “We’ll try to defend the yellow jersey without digging too much into our energy tanks” said Lukas Flückiger. The week will be long and both riders are well aware that managing energy is key at such events. However, they didn’t hesitate to take the race into their own hands from the start.
They rode with a high tempo to the top of the first long climb of the day (km 57).
The long downhill that followed went really well so the duo had a 3’ advantage on the second team when they kicked off the last climb of the day. “We ran a bit out of fuel in the climb so we lost quite some time and only finished 55 seconds ahead of the Centurion Vaude team” explained Flückiger. “But a win is a win and we increased our lead on the marathon teams so, lights are green for the next days!”
Tomorrow’s stage is a short downhill one: 43km with 2’400 of descent for only 1’500m of climbing. A stage profile that already puts a smile on Flückiger and Indergand’s faces.
