First Race of the Season for Julien Absalon

14. March 2016, Banyoles, Spain — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team

Julien Absalon kicked-off his 2016 season yesterday in the first round of the Copa Catalana Internacional in Spain. The European Champion finished 4th after an unrelenting battle at the front of the race.

‘Never change a winning formula’ Julien Absalon is well-known for his racing habits and the first round of the Spanish series is one of them. Every year, the French rider likes to test his shape on the fast, dry and usually dusty course of Banyoles. This year was no exception.

Absalon started strong, and was in a favorable position in the first few kilometers. A small group quickly broke away with Spanish José Antonio Hermida and French young talents Titouan Carod and Hugo Drechou. Carod crashed, but Victor Koretzky then joined the leading group bringing the number of lead-group riders back up to four. “I missed a little bit of energy at the end of the race and had to settle for fourth place. But I am quite satisfied with it and it feels good to be racing again!” said Absalon. “This race came after a big block of training on the road with the entire team and put me back into mountain biking rhythm.”

Julien Absalon will race next in Marseille, France on the 27th of March before joining the rest of the BMC MTB Racing Team for a training camp in Ticino.
