With a total of 22 cobbled sections over the 182.6km route, today’s Paris - Roubaix U23 was never going to be an easy ride for the BMC Development Team squad.

After only 8 kilometers of racing, Pavel Sivakov made an early move off the front of the peloton to form part of the day’s 15-rider breakaway, which was able to extend a maximum advantage of around 4 minutes.

An unfortunately timed puncture saw Sivakov slip out of contention for victory in the final 3 kilometers with the race eventually won in the iconic Roubaix velodrome by Filippo Ganna (Team Colpack).

Quotes of the day

Sport director, Klaas Lodewyck said: “The start of the race was actually perfect for us. There were 15 guys in the break and we had Pavel [Sivakov] immediately in the group which we were really happy about. I told Pavel to take it easy because I knew he had a big chance to win in Roubaix today. Unfortunately at the end of the race we had some bad luck with Pavel getting a flat right at the moment when he wanted to make a move and it was as this point that we realised the race was lost. It was definitely a tough day for us but the guys gave it their all and I think that we did all that we could in the circumstances.”

Pavel Sivakov said: “I was in the break all day long and I felt good, I had good legs. I was still there at the end and I definitely felt like I was going to have the power in the last kilometers to win but then with 3 kilometers to go I got a flat and at that point everything was gone. It’s definitely disappointing but I just keep thinking that I am still young and that I know I can come back even stronger. I’m definitely looking forward to racing again next week and showing what I can do, I am feeling in good shape.”
