There were strong podium performances from BMC Development Team riders at both the Swiss and Dutch National U23 Time Trial Championships today.

In Switzerland it was a BMC Development Team clean sweep, with Martin Schäppi being crowned U23 Swiss ITT Champion ahead of teammates Lukas Spengler and Patrick Müller.

It was a close race for podium places between the BMC Development Team trio with Schäppi setting a blistering time of 27:46.89, only two seconds ahead of Spengler and four seconds ahead of Müller.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands, Pascal Eenkhoorn stopped the clock at 15:25.00 to set the second fastest time of the Dutch U23 National ITT Championships and take his place on the podium next to race winner, Tim Rodenburg (Cyclingteam Jo Piels)

Winner’s Interview with Martin Schäppi

Congratulations, Martin! Can you describe how you are feeling after victory today?

“I am very happy and I am actually a bit surprised. Coming into this race I I knew that all the riders, especially the BMC Development Team guys, were strong so I was really hoping for a top five finish. Top five would have been great but to win is just incredible.”

What was it like on out on the course today?

“The course had quite a technical descent coming into a section of corners buts then it was a straight road to the finish so I just put my head down and kept pushing on the pedals all the way to the finish.”

What does it mean to you to wear the Swiss national champions jersey?

“It’s amazing. I feel super proud to wear my Swiss national champions jersey. I cannot wait to represent my home country and the country of our title sponsor, BMC Switzerland, the next time I line up for a time trial.”

Lukas Spengler said: “I felt really strong today. I maybe went out a bit too fast at the beginning but I gave it everything I had all the way to the finish. I knew that it was going to be a good course for me, as well as the other guys on the team, as it allowed us to use a lot of power in the straight sections. Looking ahead, I feel good for my next race and I am really motivated to keep this form up.”

Patrick Müller said: “I feel really happy. I did a good performance and I could sustain my power output. To have all three BMC Development Team guys on the podium is amazing, it was really tight at the top of the race. Martin is a good friend of mine and I am really proud and happy for him. I didn’t know about my shape coming into this race so this result definitely gives me a lot of confidence and I know that can progress further for summer.”

Pascal Eenkhoorn said: “I was feeling good and did my maximum but it just wasn’t fast enough today. I'm a bit disappointed but I can also look back to this in a positive way knowing that I have some more years to come and I am confident that I will continue to improve.”
