Extreme heat and the race's only uphill finish headlined Saturday's stage of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Tour Saturday.

John Estaban Chaves (ORICA-GreenEDGE) cruised to the win after Wouter Poels (Team Sky) slid out in the final corner as the pair sprinted to the finish. Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team) was runner-up, 12 seconds later, while Poels pushed his bike home nine seconds later.

Philippe Gilbert was the BMC Racing Team's top finisher in 13th place, 2:16 back of Estaban Chaves, who took the lead with a day to go.

Temperatures soared past 50 degrees Celsius at the start. But unlike Thursday's stage – which was shortened due to the heat and a slow pace – the 142-kilometer race was not altered.
