Intense desert heat took its toll on Thursday's opening stage of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Tour.

With temperatures soaring past 40 degrees Celsius at the start, organizers decided to shorten the race midway through the stage. Still, the 159.5-kilometer race finished nearly half-an-hour behind the slowest projected schedule as the peloton rode cautiously and into a headwind at times.

Andrea Guardini (Astana Pro Team) won the bunch sprint finish ahead of Tom Boonen (Etixx-Quick Step) and Daniele Bennati (Tinkoff-Saxo).
