Absalon Takes Fourth Place at Bundesliga in Heubach

1. May 2017, Heubach, Germany — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team

A week after his win in Haiming, Julien Absalon keeps building confidence with three weeks to go to the first round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.

The second round of the Bundesliga series, taking place in Heubach, always delivers a particular scenario. With a long uphill, followed by an equally long descent, the course is very different to what riders are now used to, so its not unusual to see big gaps happening between riders. This year, Mathias Flückiger was the man who created the biggest gap of all - the Swiss rider, and brother of Lukas Flückiger, went solo from the start and was never caught again.

Behind him, Jordan Sarrou and Florian Vogel couldn’t close the gap despite working well together. Same situation for Julien Absalon who sat in fourth position for the major part of the race. He crossed the finish line 2’38’’ behind Flückiger and 56’’ behind the chasing duo. “It was a really tough race” the Frenchman said, “Mathias Flückiger was unbeatable. But I’m satisfied with my shape and the way things are building up towards my first goals of the season.”

Reto Indergand reassured himself

Reto Indergand sometimes struggled in the ultimate laps this season but so was happy to sign a fast last lap yesterday to take 11th place. “Unfortunately it’s not a top 10 but I know I can last the full race now so I can build on that.”

Let’s see how things go for Absalon and Indergand next Saturday in Solothurn for the third round of the Proffix Swiss Bike Cup. They’ll be joined by the other three riders of the BMC MTB Racing Team, Lukas Flückiger, Lars Forster and Titouan Carod.
