Lars Forster, King of the Internazionali d’Italia in Montichiari

3. avril 2017, Montichiari, Italy — Melanie Leveau — MTB Team

Raced around the castle of Montichiari, the Trofeo Delcar crowns a new king every year and yesterday was Lars Forster’s turn.

The Trofeo Delcar, third round of the Internazionali d’Italia MTB Series, is the first HC (Hors-Classe) race of the season and is often qualified as a mini World Cup. Yesterday’s line-up was impressive and very few had their eyes on Lars Forster. In fact, Frenchmen Julien Absalon, Maxime Marotte, Italian star Marco Aurelio Fontana and Swissman Florian Vogel were the main favorites.

Starting with the Number 30 on his back (he is ranked only 68th of the UCI World Ranking after a disrupted start to the 2016 season) Forster had to fight for a couple of laps before climbing to the front of the race. On the third lap, he took the lead on the main climb of the course – finding himself alone at the top. “It wasn’t my plan to go solo but when I realized that I had a gap, I went for it” he explained after the race. “(my) legs were good and I managed to keept the gap despite feeling Marotte getting closer a couple of times.” The Frenchman, number 3 in the World Ranking, came within 7’’ of Forster but had to give up and settle for second place.

An ecstatic Forster crossed the finish line to take his first International win at the Elite level. “I’m super happy of course! I didn’t really like the course yesterday in training but found the flow today and when you’re racing at the front with such a crowd pushing you - somehow get to like it better.”

Carod in the top 10

Titouan Carod also had a solid race, taking 8th place, only 1’59’’ down from his Swiss team mate. The BMC MTB Racing Team is travelling today to Ticino where they will spend the week training together and getting ready for the first round of the Proffix Swiss Cup that takes place next Sunday in Rivera.
